September 16, 2018 (8 p.m.) Press Release - Brunswick Electric Makes Significant Headway in Power Restoration Efforts

September 16, 2018 (7 p.m.) Restoration Update:
Duke Power made good progress with transmission today. Transmission has been partially restored and approximately 58% of our members now have power. We have 46 substations but not all of them have been re-energized. Our system has a total of 132 circuits and only 70 are closed at this time so that power can flow through them. Restoration of your power depends on which circuit your home is on, so your neighbor may have power while you do not or vice versa. We will continue updating you with more information as we have it but rest assured, crews are working around the clock to restore power to every member as quickly and safely as possible.

September 16, 2018 (11:30 a.m.) Restoration Update:

Crews continue working around the clock and are reporting heavily flooded roads, many of which are increasingly impassable at this time due to the ongoing rain from the remnants of Hurricane Florence.

At this time 50% of our Columbus County members have been restored and our team has successfully backfed and changed transmission feeds to get as many restored in that area as possible. In the process they heated up 23 circuits since the storm started.

About 20,000 members in Brunswick County have been restored since the start of the storm. Crews are still clearing debris and working against rising floodwaters across the county. Much of this area will remain without power until storm damage to Duke Power’s transmission infrastructure is repaired.

We have 415 outside crew members working alongside our BEMC crews for a total of about 500 line technicians working throughout our 1,500 square mile service territory.

We know tensions start to run high the longer outages persist, but we ask for your continued patience as our crews work to restore power to everyone. Rest assured, we will not stop working until every member has been restored.

September 12, 2018 - Due to the approaching storm all BEMC offices will be closed to the public at noon today until further notice. PrePay members are encouraged to purchase enough power today to avoid running out of power through the storm.

We will be working around the clock to keep your power on, and when outages do occur we will work to restore your power as quickly and safely as possible. Please do not report outages here. All outages should be reported to 800-682-5309.

September 9, 2018 - For days, BEMC has been monitoring Florence and making preparations for the storm’s potential landfall in our service area. Our experienced and highly-trained crews continue to prepare and plan for every possible scenario with one goal in mind: to safely work day and night through potentially extreme weather to restore power as quickly as possible. We are ready to put our knowledge, expertise and dedication to work this week.

We recommend you prepare now for potential severe weather from this storm and any others that may arrive before the end of hurricane season, November 30. Download our Hurricane Preparation Guide and follow us on Facebook for regular news updates.
